P7 pupil Megan McKeown (centre) helps launch the NI Primary School Road Safety Quiz, joined by Davy Jackson from event organizers Road Safe NI and Jonathan McKeown from event sponsors CRASH Services.
Primary schools are invited to enter their local heat of the Northern Ireland Road Safety Quiz. There will be 11 regional heats starting in January 2018, with 2 teams from each region progressing to the NI final, which will be held in Belfast in February 2018.
The quiz, designed for P7 pupils, is organized by Road Safe NI, a leading road safety charity, to promote awareness among primary school children, a vulnerable road user group. The event is sponsored by leading accident management firm CRASH Services and supported by local councils, emergency services, and Real World Fleet Training Ltd, which provided a significant donation to cover event costs.
The table quiz will cover both road safety and general knowledge, featuring 7 rounds of 8 questions each, plus an extra round on road signs. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third-placed teams, and all participants will receive a certificate. Each school can send a team of 4 P7 pupils.
As an added incentive, the top two teams from each heat will advance to the Northern Ireland Finals, taking place at the NI Fire & Rescue Training Centre, Boucher Road, Belfast on Monday 26th February 2018, at 7pm.
Davy Jackson, Secretary of Road Safe NI, commented “The event has grown well over the last two decades and last year we had nearly 200 primary schools take part. It is vitality important that we educate young road users on key road safety issues.
The quiz offers an ideal opportunity for the entire P7 class to learn about road safety in a fun and engaging way. The schools then pick their team to represent the school. Following the regional heats, we make the questions available to run the quiz back in the classroom too.
Jonathan McKeown from sponsors CRASH Services said, “As a business with close connections to road users we are delighted to get involved and support road safety projects like this. We have a strong partnership with Road Safe NI and they should be commended for running such an innovative event. I would like to encourage primary schools to take the opportunity to get involved.”
